I have known Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh for about five decades when we were students together doing MD in Psychiatry at PGIMER Chandigarh. He had an illustrious record of service in armed forces as Senior Advisor in Psychiatry.
Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh is endowed with boundless compassion and an indomitable spirit and a penchant for social service. He started providing free healthcare in almost all major disciplines of medicines by highly qualified specialists to the underprivileged at the Bhai Ghanaiya Dispensary at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Gurdwara, Sector 34-D, Chandigarh, and is continuing it regularly for the past 34 years.
He established two drug de-addiction centres: a 30-bedded indoor facility at Cheema Sahib, district Sangrur (Punjab) in 2004; and a 50-bedded indoor facility that also provides treatment for female patients at Baru Sahib, district Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh) in 2016, where he continues to render voluntary services.
Dr (Col) Singh has regularly conducted numerous public awareness campaigns on the harms of drugs across Punjab,
Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, through rallies, marathons, webinars, seminars, street plays, addressing the general public and educational institutions.
Besides, Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh is an ardent writer. He has written books on the harms, causes, prevention, and treatments of drug abuse. The books are titled ‘Drug Addiction’ in English, ‘Be Aware Beware of Drugs’ in English, Punjabi, and Hindi. His third book ‘Gems of Wisdom’ is a guide for those navigating the complexities of life and the pursuit of a meaningful and purposeful existence, integrating the age-old wisdom and contemporary insights for personal and professional success. His latest book “Rewiring the Brain for Wellness”, under print, dwells on the causes of common mental issues, their remedies, and creative approaches such as mental health and spirituality, nature and mental health, and taking care of caregivers.
Recently, a book titled “91 for 19”, a biographical sketch of Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh, was released that unfolds not just the chronicles of his life as a distinguished psychiatrist and social worker, but also the epic saga of a man who, for over five decades, has sculpted the contours of mental health and drug de-addiction in north India, transforming the lives of as many as 50,000 individuals through holistic treatment, combining spirituality with traditional medical management. He has received many recognitions for his work.

Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh, Director Akal Drug De-Addiction Centres, Cheema (Punjab) and Baru Sahib (H.P.), has rendered relentless yeoman service to mankind.
After graduating from the Government Medical College Amritsar, he joined Punjab Medical in 1959 as medical officer in Mental Hospital Amritsar under Dr Vidya Sagar, the father of Indian psychiatry, as he had an intense desire to become a psychiatrist. In 1963 he was deputed to the Armed Forces in the Army Medical Corps during the Indo-China war. During Army service he qualified for an advanced course in Psychiatry, at AFMC Pune and also DPM from Pune University and M.D. from PGIMER Chandigarh. After retirement in 1991 he took up the challenge of freeing the youth from the scourge of drug dependence.
For more than 20 years now, he has engaged himself in the treatment and prevention of drug addiction among the youth and also educating the youth, especially school and college students, and making them aware of the harm of the drug menace. He attends patients with kindness, compassion and patience, has enormous tenacity and perseverance to carry on the crusade almost single-handedly. He has treated more than 10,000 patients in the two Drug De-addiction centres managed by The Kalgidhar Trust, one at Cheema Sahib, Sangrur district of Punjab and the other at Baru Sahib in H.P. He has been instrumental in holding seminars, both online and in person, to educate the youth. He has positively impacted 50,000 lives as a dedicated crusader in addictive disorders. It gives me great pleasure to write a testimonial for Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh.
After superannuation from the Army as a Senior Advisor (Psychiatry) in 1991, he devoted his entire attention as a volunteer for the care of persons suffering from drug addiction. He established three centres for healthcare and drug de-addiction at Gurudwara Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib in Sector 34, Chandigarh, at village Cheema in district Sangrur, and at Baru Sahib in district Sirmaur of Himachal Pradesh.
The essence of his experience for over 50 years has culminated in the production of four books on different aspects of drug addiction and its prevention and treatment, containing a treasure of information on the entire subject discussed in a very lucid way. He has undertaken training of numerous teams of social workers, nurses, and other volunteers in the management of drug de-addiction.
All his work and services were rendered free of cost in the spirit of service (seva) as ordained in our spiritual texts. His life is an example of selfless service to humanity, particularly the distressed people. This is truly a praiseworthy pursuit.
