My Brother My Inspiration

My Elder Brother –
S. Gurbaksh Singh

My brother, Advocate S. Gurbaksh Singh, was elder to me by ten years. He left this mortal world in 2013 to merge with eternity, but he is alive in my memory, heart, and dreams. My father was in the Railways and used to be transferred to different stations. As a result, I did not have regular schooling and was taught by my brother up to the matric examination, which I cleared in 1948.

After qualifying F.Sc. (Medical, +2 class), I got admission to Government Medical College, Amritsar, as directed by my brother. However, during my medical studies, my heart and mind flickered, and I became doubt-ridden about continuing my studies. It was he who inspired me at every step by writing to me about the lives of great men who faced hardships with courage, attained success through perseverance, and dedicated their lives to the service of humanity.

My brother was the driving force behind my accomplishments. He was my mentor, guide, and companion—a passionate reader who always shared with me the essence of books and their stirring narratives. This sparked my enthusiasm, and I continued my efforts to achieve my goal. I owe all my humble achievements entirely to the guidance and inspiration of my brother, the blessings of my parents and elders, and the grace of God. I am indeed immensely blessed.
